Music

Instrumental music

The Frenchville Instrumental Music program is a comprehensive tuition program in which students learn orchestral or band instruments.  It follows the Education Queensland curriculum guidelines. The instructors are employees of Education Queensland.

Tuition is offered on orchestral/band instruments, delivered as group teaching. Sizes of groups vary according to factors such as type of instrument, teaching space, age and ability of students. Groups of 3 to 10 are suggested as the group size on a common instrument especially at beginner level with an average class size of five. Weekly instruction usually includes one 30 minute small group lesson and one ensemble rehearsal. There is no charge for the lesson service but a student resource scheme is charged to students to support equipment replacement for larger instruments, music and peripherals purchase, and transport to and from rehearsals and performances.

Tuition is offered from year four (age eight years).  Students can commence at a later age if there are places available at the school.

Lesson times and rehearsals are considered as part of the normal school day but in the case of large ensembles it is usual to schedule rehearsals before/after school or in lunch breaks. Rehearsals and lessons are conducted in either the school activity centre or music classroom block.

There are four sources of instruments available to the school and the students:
  • privately owned instrument
  • departmental purchased instrument
  • P&C funded instruments
  • hired instruments
School instruments are returned to the school at the end of the school year unless by prior arrangements with administration. Children transferring return instruments to the school before leaving. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase their own instruments after the first 12 months of instruction if they wish to continue in the program. Some very large, expensive instruments are exempt. Students are encouraged to purchase tutor books, cork grease, reeds etc. and be responsible for minor repairs to instruments in their care eg. New strings for violins, corks for clarinets etc.

School ensembles have been formed and are very active in providing performances for community audiences and participating in local competitions eg. Fanfare and eisteddfods. More detailed information will be issued to parents of these children commencing instruction on an instrument.

Choral instruction

Frenchville proudly maintains two choirs, a junior and a senior group.  Students making a commitment to choir must agree to attend regular lunch time practices as well as before school rehearsals before major events such as Choral Festival, eisteddfod and our Spotlight concert.  Our choirs also perform at school events such as our annual ANZAC day and NAIDOC ceremonies.

Our conductors provide professional tuition.  Frenchville has a long, proud history of success in choral events.

Spotlight concert

The Spotlight concert is conducted annually in our School Activity Centre.  This gala night is a special event for our school and provides an excellent opportunity to showcase our arts program.  Our choirs, ensembles and prep students perform.  We also showcase a small number of individual student performances.  This concert is a calendar highlight and is not to be missed.
